What a terrible way to start the week. News has just been delivered regarding a sequel to the Wayans Brothers comedy White Chicks, a film where Marlon and Damon, two FBI agents, dressed up and acted like white girls to protect two heiresses from getting kidnapped. Keenen Ivory Wayans, who directed the first film, is back on board to direct solo and co-pen the script with his brothers, with no further details given on the plot, setting or circumstance of the sequel. The original White Chicks became a left-field hit when it came out in 2004, grossing over $70 million at the box office in spite of a smattering of terrible reviews (it even got nominated for five Golden Raspberry Awards - the Razzies - which award prizes to the worst films of the year). Just to throw in our two cents here, this sounds like a terrible idea, especially in an age where racial sensitivity is still an issue. Two black guys dressing up in whiteface? It was bad enough the first time around, and now, the public will be subjected to another dose of racism for the sake of comedy. We know we’re reading in too deep here - after all, this is White Chicks we’re talking about - but there’s something to be said for when a studio thinks it’s a good idea to promote this stuff.
