
This past weekend, Precious opened in a mere 18 theaters, yet it managed to smash the record for the highest grossing film to open on under 100 screens by pulling in $100,000 on each screen. Now, Lionsgate is capitalizing on the popularity by aggressively rolling out the film to as many as 1,200 theaters over Thanksgiving. This weekend, Precious begins its expansion by opening in five new markets that includes Washington and San Francisco, then expanding to 800-1,200 screens by November 20th. Typically, a film like this would have a rollout that gradually occurs over a six or seven week period, but the word-of-mouth and award show hype has heightened anticipation for the film. We saw it, and yes, we’ll confirm it was worth it. Go see it when it hits your local theater.
