Yesterday, it looked as though Roland Emmerich’s disaster film 2012 was on track to have an excellent debut in its opening weekend, but it didn’t look this promising. According to Variety, the apocalypse flick has nabbed an estimated $225 million at the global box office, split between $160 million made overseas and $65 million grossed at the domestic box office. In the grand scheme of things, that gives 2012 the ninth best global debut of all time, a ridiculously impressive feat for a film that’s been getting slammed for its terrible plot and acting (and, of course, lauded for its special graphics). Meanwhile, Precious: Based on the Novel ‘Push’ by Sapphire had an excellent weekend as well, earning $6.1 mil on only 174 screens, which is enough to help it land at number four on the chart. That’s great and all, but wow. We’re really shocked that 2012 did this well! What’d you think? Did it live up to all the hype?
