It’s not every day that you hear about Morgan Freeman making moves on something that isn’t cinema-focused, so we figure it’s worth a post. According to Variety, Morgan Freeman and Lori McCreary’s Revelations Entertainment is backing Digiboo in a joint venture to implement technology to allow people to plug a USB 3.0 flash drive into kiosks to allow them download rental films for home viewing. The project kicks off this January, when 100 digital movie kiosks will be put in Hollywood Video and Movie Gallery retail stores. The technology allows for rentals that aren’t as cheap as Redbox (their rentals go for $1.09), but it gives consumers better portability and flexibility for viewing – plus, there’s no need to return anything when you’re done with the film. The company is in negotiations with studios to license films for renting, but they’re confident the studios will come on board. May the force be with them.
