Each week, Showing Out will keep you up-to-date with a post giving the rundown of all the freshly released films. Some, you might have already known about, while others - well, not so much. So without further ado, here’s a look at some of the movies that might convince you enough to brave the outside world and head to the theater this weekend.

Avatar (directed by James Cameron; starring Sam Worthington, Zoe Saldana, Sigourney Weaver, Stephen Lang and Michelle Rodriguez)

After years of teasing and unparalleled hype (mostly over the fact that this film was rumored to cost over $500 million), James Cameron’s epic Avatar is finally here. Released in Imax 3-D and regular 2-D, the film focuses on Jake Sully (Worthington), a former Marine confined to a wheelchair that gets a second chance at life when his body is transported into an alien Na’vi body on the planet Pandora. But when a beautiful Na’vi girl named Neytiri (Saldana) wins him over, he has to decide between helping the human race or Na’vi survive. Honestly, this has started to look good to us over the past few months. We might just shell out our hard-earned dollar.

Did You Hear About the Morgans? (starring Hugh Grant, Sarah Jessica Parker, Sam Elliott, Mary Steenburgen and Elisabeth Moss)

The obligatory rom-com of the weekend, Morgans sees a dysfunctional couple (Parker, Grant) being forcibly relocated as part of a witness protection program, only to readjust to rustic life in hilarious ways after having lived in the big city for years. Of course, they hate each other, but their newfound situation helps to rekindle their love for one another. We’ll pass on this one.

Nine (starring Daniel Day-Lewis, Penelope Cruz, Marion Cotillard, Nicole Kidman, Kate Hudson, Stacie ‘Fergie’ Ferguson and Judi Dench)

This has been getting some heavy award nomination love. Billed as a sequel to Fellini’s 8 ½, Nine focuses on world famous film director Guido Contini (Lewis) whose life is thrown into turmoil when he’s forced to balance all of the women in his life. The women, of course, are all hotties that hold down a different area of his world. Though it’s only in limited release, this is definitely our pick for the weekend.
