Speaking of James Cameron, here’s some news regarding his most recent box office feat Avatar. According to the L.A. Times, Avatar will hit retail on April 22nd care of Twentieth Century Fox Home Entertainment in both DVD and Blu-ray formats. The release is being described as “unconventional,” forgoing the extra features and settling on just a simple menu function, a decision meant to allow every part of the disc to be used for the best graphical presentation. And on top of that, Avatar will become the first Blu-ray film in history to be released by a major studio without a single promo trailer or item of any kind. The only downside? The release won’t be in 3-D. But by the time April 22nd rolls around, if you haven’t seen the film yet, you’re already a lost cause.

If the numbers yesterday weren’t indicative enough, Tim Burton’s Alice in Wonderland stays killin’ ‘em. According to THR, the fantasy flick roped in an additional $62 million in its second weekend at the box office, upping its overall domestic cume to $208.6 million and international gross to $430 mil. Matt Damon-headliner Green Zone came in a distant second, grossing $14.5 million in its first weekend - a respectable entry considering that Alice is on a hot streak. She’s Out of My League dropped at number three with $9.6 million in its first week, while the sappy Remember Me came in at number four with a measly $8.3 million in its opening weekend. And rounding out the top five is Our Family Wedding, the Forest Whitaker vehicle that roped in a meh $7.6 mil. Anything that didn’t make the top five? Click that link above and get on to it.

Well would you take a look at this. In its second week in release, Tim Burton’s Alice in Wonderland scored the number one spot at the box office yesterday, pulling in an additional $17.4 million in ticket sales to up its overall cume to more than $133 mil earned at the domestic box office. Meanwhile, Green Zone was off to a lame start with only $5 million in sales, which was enough to put it at number two, while Remember Me grossed a measly $3.6 million to put it at number three. She’s Out of My League bowed at number four with $3.3 mil, while Our Family Wedding made $2.5 million to put it in fifth. Though the numbers aren’t faring too well for any newcomers, it looks as though Tim Burton’s going to have a green Christmas this year.

Come now. You knew this was bound to happen, and it did. Tim Burton’s new visual masterpiece Alice in Wonderland scored at the box office this past weekend, becoming the highest-grossing film to bow in theaters in winter with $116.3 million earned at the domestic b.o. The film bested Passion of the Christ with $83.8 mil, a record that was set back in February 2004. Judging by how the Oscars went last night, we’re going to be seeing a big bump for The Hurt Locker next week - just you wait.

“Shutter” Wins Weekend B.O.

Saturday’s numbers made it pretty clear that Shutter Island was going to have a repeat at the top of the box office, and it looks like those early numbers were correct. According to BoxOfficeMojo.com, the Scorcese pic roped in an additional $22.2 million, upping its overall domestic cume to $75,076,000. Newcomers Cop Out and The Crazies bowed at numbers two and three in their first weekend in theaters, pulling in $18,565,000 and $16,521,000, both of which are respectable numbers considering the storm that could have kept moviegoers from hitting up the local cinema. Avatar kept strong at number four with an additional $14 million added to the pile, while Percy Jackson made $9.8 million, which was enough to put it at number five. No other newcomers made it into the top 20, but at least this one’s a respectable win for everyone in the top five.

Looks as though a new contender couldn’t unseat Marin Scorcese’s Shutter Island from number one, where it held the box office last weekend during its first few days in theaters. Yesterday at the box office, the Leonardo DiCaprio-starring film came in at the top of the b.o., pulling in an additional $6.7 million and upping its overall domestic cume to $59.6 million earned in just eight days. Meanwhile, the Kevin Smith-directed buddy cop movie Cop Out came in a close number two with $6 million in ticket sales, while pseudo-zombie flick The Crazies came in an even closer third with $5.9 million to put it at number three. And, of course, Avatar still isn’t going away, pulling in an additional $3.1 million to up its overall cume to $696 mil, while Valentine’s Day goes strong at number five with another $2.9 million to its overall tally, which now stands at $93.8 mil. Guess the weather just can’t stop people from seeing their precious films.
