Come now. You knew this was bound to happen, and it did. Tim Burton’s new visual masterpiece Alice in Wonderland scored at the box office this past weekend, becoming the highest-grossing film to bow in theaters in winter with $116.3 million earned at the domestic b.o. The film bested Passion of the Christ with $83.8 mil, a record that was set back in February 2004. Meanwhile, Antoine Fuqua’s Brooklyn’s Finest came in a very distant second with $13.5 million earned in its opening days, while Shutter Island dropped to third with $13.3 mil, Cop Out fell to fourth with $9.1 million and Avatar moved to fifth with $7.7 mil. Judging by how the Oscars went last night, we’re going to be seeing a big bump for The Hurt Locker next week - just you wait.

Saturday’s numbers made it pretty clear that Shutter Island was going to have a repeat at the top of the box office, and it looks like those early numbers were correct. According to BoxOfficeMojo.com, the Scorcese pic roped in an additional $22.2 million, upping its overall domestic cume to $75,076,000. Newcomers Cop Out and The Crazies bowed at numbers two and three in their first weekend in theaters, pulling in $18,565,000 and $16,521,000, both of which are respectable numbers considering the storm that could have kept moviegoers from hitting up the local cinema. Avatar kept strong at number four with an additional $14 million added to the pile, while Percy Jackson made $9.8 million, which was enough to put it at number five. No other newcomers made it into the top 20, but at least this one’s a respectable win for everyone in the top five.

Looks as though a new contender couldn’t unseat Marin Scorcese’s Shutter Island from number one, where it held the box office last weekend during its first few days in theaters. Yesterday at the box office, the Leonardo DiCaprio-starring film came in at the top of the b.o., pulling in an additional $6.7 million and upping its overall domestic cume to $59.6 million earned in just eight days. Meanwhile, the Kevin Smith-directed buddy cop movie Cop Out came in a close number two with $6 million in ticket sales, while pseudo-zombie flick The Crazies came in an even closer third with $5.9 million to put it at number three. And, of course, Avatar still isn’t going away, pulling in an additional $3.1 million to up its overall cume to $696 mil, while Valentine’s Day goes strong at number five with another $2.9 million to its overall tally, which now stands at $93.8 mil. Guess the weather just can’t stop people from seeing their precious films.

Looks like Leonardo DiCaprio and Martin Scorcese have reason to pop champagne tonight. According to THR, the two each saw their highest opening weekend of their respective careers, with Shutter Island taking the weekend box office with $40.2 million earned since Friday (it defied expectations for it to make only $25-$30 mil). Meanwhile, last week’s newcomer Valentine’s Day slipped to number two with another $17.6 million earned, upping its overall cume to $87.4 mil in just 10 days. And moving up a notch to number three is James Cameron’s Avatar, which pulled in yet another $16.1 million and taking its domestic total to $687.8 million. We’re guessing that it’ll pass the $700 mil mark next week - god bless ‘em!

Posted by ShowingOut On February - 18 - 2010

It’s always nice when Oscar-nominated actors focus on something other than themselves, so we give props to the New York Times for talking with this year’s Oscar noms about their favorite performances from the past decade. And honestly, the results aren’t really that surprising - most of these performances are on our top-100 performances list, too. Of the notables, Jake Gyllenhaal names Peter Sarsgaard’s performance in An Education as his fave, while Julianne Moore picks Sean Penn in Mystic River and Morgan Freeman notes Meryl Streep for anything she’s done in the past 50 years. Watch the video above and hit the jump if you’re video-averse to read the list.

Posted by ShowingOut On February - 15 - 2010

vday

A four-day weekend can only mean one thing: big debuts for new movies. So it comes as no surprise to hear that newcomer Valentine’s Day, which ruled the box office over the past two days, has officially won the top spot on the President’s Day weekend box office. According to THR, the celebrity-packed film roped in a record-breaking $66.9 million, a feat that it accomplished because, you know, it was Valentine’s Day yesterday. Percy Jackson came in second with $38.8 million, while The Wolfman came in a close third with $36.5 million made over the past four days. Avatar held strong at number four with an impressive $30 mil in its 10th week, while Dear John came in fifth in its second weekend with $18.8 million. If you’re in a couple and you managed to escape Valentine’s Day this weekend, we applaud you.
